The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant
The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant was established in memory of British photojournalist Ian Parry, who died on assignment in Romania in 1989 at the age of 24. It exists to support and spotlight young, emerging photojournalists as they begin their professional careers. Each year the grant runs a free, international open call for photographers aged 24 or under, or students enrolled in a full-time photography course, inviting them to submit a portfolio and a proposal for a project they would undertake if awarded the grant.
The core intent of the grant is to provide financial support, mentorship and visibility to promising photographers so they can undertake meaningful documentary work that addresses important social, humanitarian, cultural or political issues. The winner receives funds (currently £10,000) to pursue their proposed project, access to equipment, guidance from experienced professionals, and opportunities for exposure through exhibitions, reviews and media partnerships.
At its heart, the grant aims to encourage compelling, ethically grounded photojournalism from a new generation, helping photographers not only to complete ambitious storytelling projects but also to begin building a career in visual reporting
Photo North will be hosting an exhibition by the 20 year old IPPG 2025 recipient, Omar Ashtawy, who is living and working in Gaza.
A presentation about the grant will be delivered 1.30pm Friday 13th by award winning photographer Carol Allen-Storey, IPPG judge and chair of the advisory committee.
