one to watch
Debs Parr has been chosen as this year’s
Photo North ‘One to Watch’.
Debs considers herself to be a social documentary photographer, capturing images of people at large events which encapsulate our way of life, our ‘Britishness’. In particular, football culture plays a huge part and Debs captures the passion of the fans, the camaraderie, loyalty, family, rivalry, tribalism, connections to their club and something much deeper, using portraiture and candid photography. A big football fan herself, she is the 'Her Game Too' Ambassador for her club Bolton Wanderers FC.
Debs is renown for capturing the emotions of people in a mesmerising uplifting way, giving her the ability to tell unique stories with her images and has shown her work in several exhibitions; working with Hive Arts, Girlfanszine, Photo North Festival, British Culture Archive, Bury Art Museum, Bolton Museum and the National Football Museum.
Debs is currently working with Walk The Plank Arts alongside English National Opera on a project titled 'Perfect Pitch' where opera and football collide and she has recently completed commissions for the Football Association at the 2025/26 Women's FA Cup and female fan portraits for 'This Fan Girl' at Burnley FC.
Some of Debs' football images are currently on display in 'Journeys to the match' commissioned by the National Football Museum and exhibited at Lancashire Archives in Preston until May 2026
Debs graduated from the University of Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Photography and is now undertaking her Masters degree in visual journalism and storytelling.
Debs will be exhibiting EVERYTHING BUT THE GAME at this year’s festival.
“My football fan series ‘everything but the game’ started three years ago, I started taking photos of going to the match, what I saw and experienced as a football fan, the journey there, the rituals, friends, camaraderie, clothes, tattoos, ephemera and, in particular, highlighting the emotions of the fans, because supporting a football team is like an emotional rollercoaster; I like to be in the thick of it so that people can view my images with the feeling of what it is like to be a football fan and experience the match day and raw emotions that I am able to witness and capture. The images I take are all about the fans and football culture and bringing fans’ identity to the fore.”
